Secession is the best option for those who aren’t happy with Obama’s re-election. At least, that’s the deemed solution that almost a hundred thousand Texans as well as people from other states have considered all submitting a petition that carry these words: “Peacefully grant the State of ______ to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.”
Putting these secession requests by Republicans in perspective, Michael Cushman, the founder of the Southern Nationalist Network, says, “The election results were really great for our cause. I think it was better that Obama won because it has revived a lot of interest in secession in the South because he is very unpopular here.”
In stark similarity to liberals who threatened to move to Canada if George Bush won a second term, this desire to secede from the Union does seem to offer comic relief as unilateral secession was made illegal after the Civil War.
The reason why these petitions have been submitted was because of the White House’s promise to review any petition that is posted at its “We the People” website and that has more than 25,000 signatures.
Of course, these petitions aren’t being taken seriously because anyone can sign as many times as they like while many people are of the opinion that this is a last resort from people who would like to preserve white supremacy.
And then there are counter-petitions which amount to almost 10,000 – some of them that have turned things into a post-election joke, and which have been removed from the website. With the White House yet to respond to these petitions, it’s obvious that the President has more important items on his agenda to deal with.
