Secretary of State Hillary Clinton makes a surprise visit to Baghdad,
Iraq on April 25, 2009. Secretary Clinton was met by US
Ambassador to Iraq Christopher Hill and later met and held a news
conference with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
Clinton also met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Iraqi PM Nuri
al-Maliki. Secretary Hillary Clinton spoke to Iraqi citizens
and US Embassy staff in Baghdad before leaving Iraq. Clinton said that
despite the recent suicide bombings and the planned
US troop withdrawals from Iraq the US will continue to assist with the
security of Iraq.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs holds a rare Sunday press
conference to announce possible emergency measures
due to an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico that has spread around the
world. The White House has stepped up efforts to monitor
the outbreak after 20 swine flu cases were confirmed in several US
states. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano
said that this outbreak is similar to preparing for a hurricane not
knowing the upcoming dangers. Dr. Richard Besser, the Acting
Director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also
answered questions from the White House media. |

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced an increase in the
pandemic Phase Level to 4 on a scale of 6 after several
countries confirm swine flu cases, including 40 confirmed cases in the
US. American officials have advised against travel to
Mexico. Schools across Mexico were closed until May 6, 2009 to help stop
the spread of the swine flu (H1N1) that has killed
150 Mexicans. Mexican police and customs officials wear protective
masks, and passengers returning from Mexico are seen
arriving at the airport wearing masks. |

President Barack Obama speaks at an annual science meeting at the
National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC on
April 27, 2009. President Obama said he wanted the US to return to a
high water mark of scientific achievement. Obama said he
is committed to allocating 3% of the US GDP for scientific research
and development. Obama also commented on the spread of
swine flu (H1N1) saying it is not cause for alarm. New Yorkers were alarmed
to see the presidential plane flying over lower
Manhattan followed by an F16 military jet. Apparently the Defense Department was
on a photo shoot with the presidential Boeing
747 jet. New York Mayor Bloomberg and New Yorkers were not notified. Mayor Bloomberg said the
low flight over New York was
insensitive. The White House later apologized. President Obama was
furious over the decision and said it will not happen again.
The presidential plane is known as Air Force One when the President is aboard. |

Chapter 11 bankruptcy after bond holders would not reduce
their demands. President Obama said the employees made sacrifices and he
does not stand with the bond holders. Part of the
bankruptcy restructuring plan includes a merger with Fiat. President
Obama said the partnership between Chrysler and Fiat gives
the company a strong chance for success. Both the American and Canadian
government will take a small equity position with
Chrysler and both countries will be on the Board of Directors. General
Motors must present a restructuring plan by June 1, 2009. |
