Secretary of State Clinton arrives in Beijing, China on the evening
of February 20, 2009. On February 21, 2009 Secretary
Clinton meets with the Chinese Foreign Minister, and Chinese Premier Wen
Jiabao. Later Clinton met with Chinese President
Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Clinton advised
Chinese officials that the US is willing to put aside
discussions on human rights, and said the world needs to focus on the
financial crisis. Secretary Clinton urged the
Chinese to continue buying US debt through US Treasuries.

economic stimulus package was the focus of discussions between the White

officials at the Fiscal Responsibility Summit in
the East Room of the White House. Senator John McCain was one of the
attendees who asked questions after Obama's
remarks. Attendees broke off into groups to focus on particular segments
of the economy. President Obama announced
a goal of reducing the national debt to half by 2013. |

President Obama remarked on the economy at three separate functions. The
day was focused on initiatives to repair a
broken US economy, ideas to reduce waste in spending, improving

Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso is the first foreign leader to
visit President Obama at the White House. Japan's PM Taro Aso
arrived at Andrews Air Force Base late on February 23, 2009. Obama and
Aso met in the Oval Office with US officials
including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who visited the Japanese PM
in Tokyo the previous week. |

President Obama's speech was well received by both Republicans and
Democrats. President Obama discussed a wide
range of economic topics including health care, banks, employment,
education, torture, military benefits, and morality.
Obama was frank about the current financial crisis but optimistic for
the long term health of the US economy. |

Vice President, Members of Congress, and the First
Lady of the United
States:
I’ve come here tonight not only to address the distinguished men and
women in this great chamber, but to speak frankly and directly to the
men and women who sent us here.
I
know that for many Americans watching right now, the state of our
economy is a concern that rises above all others. And rightly so. If you
haven’t been personally affected by this recession, you probably know
someone who has – a friend; a neighbor; a member of your family.
