President Obama nominates Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as
Health and Human Services Secretary on March 2, 2009.
President Obama also nominates Nancy-Ann DeParle as Director of the
White House Office for Health reform. President Obama
was joined by Senator Bob Dole at the announcements made in the East
Room of the White House. Obama expressed an
urgency to fix the US health care system. A White House meeting on
health care is scheduled later in the week. |

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Special Envoy to the
Middle East George Mitchell travel to the Egyptian Red Sea
resort for the International Conference in Support of the Palestinian
Economy for the Reconstruction of Gaza. Clinton
and Mitchell also met with Middle East and European ministers and
leaders. The conference received pledges of over $5
billion for Gaza reconstruction. The US insisted these funds do not go
through the hands of Hamas.

Congress at Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on March 4, 2009.
PM Gordon Brown's speech focused on the need for a universal approach to
the world economic crisis. Brown said that Obama
has a unique opportunity to pull the world together and lead in this
time of global financial instability.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meets with Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
Clinton said the demolition of Palestinian homes by Israel is a
violation of international law. Clinton also said Israel should
stop construction and remove the blockades in Palestine. The Obama
administration is pushing for Palestinian statehood.
