Kagan and Obama

Barack Obama is idolized by the press and vilified by others. His campaign promises have been slow in getting fulfilled and his term in office so far has been full of controversy. The latest issue to confront him is his nomination for the position of Supreme Court Judge – Elena Kagan.

The nomination is immediately seen is conducive to the President and his policies. Republicans are already up in arms over the nomination and are sure to give her grilling in the Senate before any ratification is given to the post. As a Supreme Court Judge Kagan will be key in presiding over key Obama policies which are under fire.

Most notably, the healthcare reform pushed through by the Obama Administration and the Democrats will be one of the issues she will be scrutinized on. The bill has already been challenged by no less than eighteen states and five more have recently joined the list as of last week. Thirty six state legislatures have had bills and resolutions introduced trying to oppose or at the very least limit the reform plan. The whole thing will ultimately end up in the Supreme Court where Kagan could be a deciding factor.

Many Republicans fear that Kagan will end up being a “rubber stamp” for Obama and his Administration. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid met with Kagan and released a statement soon thereafter. He endorsed her nomination as the replacement for retiring Judge Stevens and said that she has “a strong belief that the Supreme Court should be a forum where the rule of law wins out and where people from every walk of life can receive a fair hearing.”
