With Obama requesting for a review in order to make the deportation process more humane, the Republicans have different ideas – they want him to abandon the review altogether.
In a letter addressed to the President by 22 Republican senators, they had this to convey, in writing, “Clearly, the urgent task facing your administration is to improve immigration enforcement, not to look for new ways to weaken it. Our entire constitutional system is threatened when the Executive Branch suspends the laws at its whim and our nation’s sovereignty is imperiled when the commander-in-chief refuses to defend the integrity of its borders.”
Alternatively, Obama is under pressure from immigration reform advocacy groups to either stop or slow down deportations while Congress continues to deal with the issue of fixing the immigration system with a comprehensive bill.
Twenty of these 22 senators voted against an immigration overhaul that was passed by the Senate last year allowing 12 million people without documentation to apply for citizenship while also boosting border security.
Quite interestingly, the other two signers not only helped in getting the bill passed in the Senate but also helped negotiate a deal for foreign workers to secure more visas as well as in developing a $46 billion border security package that gained them a few Republican votes.
As for the Republican-led House of Representatives, they have refused to take up the Senate bill saying that they will pass their own version of the immigration overhaul.
