Following remarks by Rush Limbaugh, in calling Georgetown University’s law student Sandra Fluke a ‘slut’ and a ‘prostitute’ for supporting Obama’s policies on birth control, President Obama responded [to Limbaugh] by talking about his daughters and his desire for them to contribute to important matters freely.
Keeping Limbaugh’s remarks in mind, President Obama said, “I thought about Malia and Sasha [his daughters], and one of the things I want them to do as they get older is to engage in issues they care about, even ones I may not agree with them on. I want them to be able to speak their mind in a civil and thoughtful way, and I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they are being good citizens.”
The reason for Limbaugh’s comments that has incited outrage amongst women has added fuel to the fire and has drawn attention to the ongoing debate between Obama and Republicans on allowing contraception to be covered by health insurance plans.
Sandra Fluke, studying at one of the oldest Catholic and Jesuit universities, spoke openly about the financial hardship that female students have to face due to the lack of coverage that insurance plans provide for contraception.
With Limbaugh’s remarks, many say that Obama and the Democrats will now stand to gain as women voters but Obama thinks that this stance on contraception would be just one of the issues that matter to women and that they would cast their vote based on what they think about a whole range of issues.
Obama, when asked whether Republicans were against women, refused to comment.
