With the federal ban on banning same-sex marriage overturned by the Supreme Court, Obama has asked his cabinet members to implement the ruling.
On his way to Senegal, and in expressing his happiness, President Obama wrote, “The laws of our land are catching up to the fundamental truth that millions of Americans hold in our hearts: when all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all more free.”
Even if the President views this ruling as a victory, conservatives are determined to consider this as a setback and will continue to make efforts to stop gays and lesbians from marrying.
Obama also spoke with MSNBC’s Sandy Stier and Kris Perry saying that he was proud of them and their efforts to helping a lot of people and also telephoned the plaintiffs to thanks them for support in turning down Proposition 8.
In swift response, California Governor, Jerry Brown said that he was taking action to implement the ruling by having the California Department of Public Health advise the state’s counties to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couple as soon as it is confirmed that the stay has been lifted.
Alternatively, Tony Perkins, the President of the Family Research Council, believes that time is not in favor of those who wish to redefine marriage while John Boehner expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court ruling.
With divided responses from political leaders and advocates based on the Supreme Court’s ruling, it can be safely said that this debate will continue to take place as to whether marriage should be defined as a union only between a man and woman.
