President Obama considers the late Nelson Mandela to be his personal hero while also adding that he was one of the most courageous, influential and decent human beings ever.
In speaking on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International day, Obama said, “A dignified warrior for justice and equality, he caused us to believe in the promise of a better world. Today Madiba’s birthday is the first time we have marked this occasion since he left this world late last year, but his impact on our lives remains palpable and his inspiration endures.”
Nelson Mandela, who was called ‘Madiba’, was born on July 18 1918 passed away on December 5, 2013 from a pulmonary infection at the ripe age of 95.
Obama also went on to remark that Mandela himself did not want this day to be remembered as a holiday but to be one that was dedicated to service. He also wanted people to realise that giving one’s time and energy to the community without expecting anything in return was the greatest gift that one could give.
Finally, he also said that we should remember this day among others as one that should be spent in being of service to others so as to emulate Mandela even if we will never see another person like him again.
It was clear that in visiting Robben Island with his family last year, Obama was deeply moved by the example of courage that Mandela showed during his imprisonment.
For the 27 years that Mandela was imprisoned, 18 years were spent at the prison located on Robben Island.
