In a new poll, President Obama’s approval ratings has climbed above 50 percent for the first time in 2 years. This could prove crucial to the upcoming 2016 Presidential elections.
Conducted by ABC and the Washington Post, it was found that 51 percent of Americans approve of Obama’s performance – up by 6 points since July.
Given that this is the first time since May 2013 that the President’s approval ratings has climbed above 50 percent, pollsters attribute this to the improved strength of the US economy off late.
Another reason why his ratings have risen is the reversal of his decision to keep troops in Afghanistan instead of withdrawing them.
As for the upcoming elections, these numbers could prove decisive as to whether the next President is from Obama’s own or from the opposing party. A top Republican pollster, Frank Luntz, reveals that no president with an approval rating that is below 50 percent has been succeeded by someone from his own party in the past seven decades.
Speaking of which, both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden have maintained close ties with the President. The former has approved of Obama’s accomplishments while the other, Joe Biden believes that everything that the President and himself have worked for is at stake.
The poll also looked at ratings for Congress. While Democrats registered a 35 percent, Republicans could only muster 24 percent. 59 percent of those who took the poll disapproved of the former while 71 percent disapproved of the Republicans.
Independents are also unhappy with both parties, with 65 percent disapproving of Democrats while 75 percent disapprove of Republicans.
