Obama Announces Plans to Strengthen US Manufacturing

Along with a $300 million investment in three crucial technologies that will enhance the US industrial competitiveness, Obama will carry out a number of executive actions to strengthen advanced manufacturing.

The three objectives that Obama has and which will appear on the Obama Advanced Manufacturing Partnership report involves improving the business climate but also securing a skilled workforce as well as spurring innovation as a result.

As for the investment in emerging technologies, NASA as well as Departments of Defense and Agriculture will participate to produce composites and bio-based material, advanced sensors for manufacturing as well as digital manufacturing.

The manufacture of these high-tech materials includes the production of steel alloys that are twice as strong and lighter than the materials used today as well as reduce or eliminate the reliance of critical material from foreign sources.

Also, the National Science Foundation will bring together universities and the industry by setting up two manufacturing centers of excellence and that will focus on sensors for advanced and digital manufacturing.

In addition, a White House statement revealed that the Labor Department is launching an American Apprenticeships Grant Commission so as to encourage apprenticeships in regard to advanced manufacturing.

Finally, the Commerce Department’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership will also launch a $130 million competition over a period of five years over 10 states so as to encourage small manufacturers to adopt new technologies as they bring new products to the market.

Obama is to meet the Obama Advanced Manufacturing Partnership steering committee as the White House shortly.
